Helios was appointed to deliver the Fire Safety Strategy for the new Bishop’s Stortford High School which will see the school move to a new expanded site in the town at Whittington Way, able to offer 2500 places in a modern teaching environment.
Bridgend Campus College
Bridgend College’s new campus development is to be located in Bridgend Town Centre and will comprise two new six storey buildings. The campus will provide a wide range of teaching facilities including for performing arts, art, music and editing, hair and beauty catering and hospitality and childhood studies and will include a 200-seat auditorium with stage and facilities suitable for music and theatre productions. Helios have already delivered the fire strategy up to RIBA Stage 4 and are currently providing RIBA Stage 5 and 6 construction support to the main contractor.
Interesting challenges included justifying single stair access to the smaller block and to the upper floors of the main building both of which have floors over 18m, including utilising CFD modelling. In addition, fire engineering justification was required to justify the occupancy level on the upper floors providing a detailed fire engineering evacuation calculations in conjunction with the CFD modelling.
Ty Gwyn
Extension to an existing primary school for special educational needs. Helios were appointed for RIBA Stage 4, 5 and 6. Helios engaged with the end users to determine additional fire strategy requirements over and above functional requirements such as evacuation strategy and additional compartmentation needs.
Llanishen Fach
The provision of a new extension to an existing school. The extension was single storey with existing means of escape through the new building. An occupancy assessment was undertaken to ensure both the existing building and extension had sufficient exit widths.
UCS Hampstead
The development of a new teaching block attached to an existing school. Helios were engaged to undertake RIBA Stage 2 works and planning statement for a new three storey education building with sports facilities located on the roof. Fire service access and means of escape was challenging due to the existing buildings and split level site.
Moorland School
The development of two new single storey educational buildings located at Moorland School. The provision of a detailed fire strategy for both schools were undertaken as well as RIBA Stage 5 and 6 support. Site orientation visit was necessary to determine existing site access, hydrant locations and to determine notional boundaries.
Wheatridge School, Gloucester
A new all through two storey school for up to 200 primary and secondary school pupils with moderate and additional learning difficulties.
